One of Us is Lying Review

I didn’t find this to be amazing, but I found it enjoyable.

Rating: 3/5

Pay close attention and you might solve this.

On Monday afternoon, five students at Bayview High walk into detention.

Bronwyn, the brain, is Yale-bound and never breaks a rule.

Addy, the beauty, is the picture-perfect homecoming princess.

Nate, the criminal, is already on probation for dealing.

Cooper, the athlete, is the all-star baseball pitcher.

And Simon, the outcast, is the creator of Bayview High's notorious gossip app.

Only, Simon never makes it out of that classroom. Before the end of detention Simon's dead. And according to investigators, his death wasn't an accident. On Monday, he died. But on Tuesday, he'd planned to post juicy reveals about all four of his high-profile classmates, which makes all four of them suspects in his murder. Or are they the perfect patsies for a killer who's still on the loose?

Everyone has secrets, right? What really matters is how far you would go to protect them.

This was voted as my January #EnchantedReadsBookClub pick!

I’ve been seeing this book everywhere. So I was so excited that this got picked to be my January book club pick! It finally got me to pick this up and see what the hype was all about.

One of Us is Lying is The Breakfast Club meets murder mystery! Five strangers walk into detention but only four walk out alive. Now the four alive are suspects, and all four have secrets to hide.

This was such an interesting read. I didn’t know who I could trust. All the way through my theory of who it could have been kept changing. Though, one of my initial theories ended up being the who. Even though I was right in one of my early guesses, I still enjoyed hearing all the details around it, especially the “why.”

I didn’t know who I could trust. All the way through my theory of who it could have been kept changing.

Besides the whodunit, I really didn’t think this was all that amazing. Not a lot about this truly surprised me or felt all that shocking. When we started hearing about all the secrets from our main characters, I wasn’t blown away. I found the secrets interesting, but not necessarily unique.

All that said, I did mean it when I said I enjoyed this. I just wasn’t wowed. And I do think this was probably a little overhyped. I was expecting a little more shock factor.

Thought at the same time, I’m very excited to read the sequel to this one! The premise for the sequel has me even more intrigued than I was for this one! Plus, I totally want to read more from McMannus in general.

So as I said, I didn’t find this to be amazing, but I found it enjoyable. And I look forward to the sequel. I think anyone who enjoys teenage dramas and murder mysteries would enjoy this one!
