This Time Next Year Review

Updated: Sep 11, 2022

This was the best book to start the new year off with! I mean it’s a New Year’s romance!

Rating: 5/5

Their lives began together, but their worlds couldn't be more different. After thirty years of missed connections, they're about to meet again...

Minnie Cooper knows two things with certainty: that her New Year's birthday is unlucky, and that it's all because of Quinn Hamilton, a man she's never met. Their mothers gave birth to them at the same hospital just after midnight on New Year's Day, but Quinn was given the cash prize for being the first baby born in London in 1990--and the name Minnie was meant to have, as well. With luck like that, it's no wonder each of her birthdays has been more of a disaster than the one before.

When Minnie unexpectedly runs into Quinn at a New Year's party on their mutual thirtieth birthday, she sees only more evidence that fortune has continued to favor him. The gorgeous, charming business owner truly seems to have it all--while Minnie's on the brink of losing her pie-making company and her home. But if Quinn and Minnie are from different worlds, why do they keep bumping into each other? And why is it that each fraught encounter leaves them both wanting more?

This was the best book to start the new year off with! I mean it’s a New Year’s romance! I had to pick it up first thing! I usually just see holiday romances that take place around Christmas, so this was a first for me. And I absolutely loved it! From the first page, I was hooked.

This was the best book to start the new year off with!

We primarily follow Minnie, who grew up believing she was unlucky. It had started when she was born, on New Years’ born one minute too late to win the prize money of being the first baby of the decade. Not only that but the baby that won also stole her name to be, Quinn. Now she’s called Minnie, and that’s not all, her last name is Cooper. Minnie hates to go out on New Year’s Eve because nothing ever goes right. She grew up despising a man she’s never met who stole her name. Always being told by her mother whenever she was unlucky, “this would never have happened to a Quinn Cooper.” Talk about lovely parenting. 30 years later, Minnie finally meets Quinn, her nemesis and from there, an unlikely friendship grows.

This book was so great! Definitely more of a rom-com type romance, especially with all Minnie’s back luck around New Year’s. It truly gave me all the feels, especially laughter! Oh, man! I didn’t think I could ever laugh so hard at a book. All the way through I was entertained never a dull moment. We start the book out on New Year’s and see all the disastrous events that happen to Minnie throughout the night. We even get to see glimpses of past New Years’ to see this jinx that Minnie claims she has and is so afraid of. Now I can honestly say, none of the things that happen to Minnie is that funny, and not all of them are, but reading most of them that happen was definitely chuckle-worthy. And if you read this one, my favorite was the airport! Oh, I laughed for a good 10 minutes straight! I can definitely see this being made into a movie!

That being said, I wouldn’t say this is at all original. It’s original in its own way, but the idea of nemesis to lovers isn’t new. Plus, even I’ll admit, it was very predictable. But, with these types of books, that’s usually the case and I don’t mind that. I still thoroughly enjoyed this and that’s what matters.

As I mentioned, there was never a dull moment. This book flows extremely well! We mainly see Minnie’s point of view but we do also see Quinn’s point of view, primarily his past, seeing how his New Year’s went. I loved seeing all of Minnie’s thoughts, she was such a likable character for me. She was funny and witty with her never-ending attempts to become a chef. I saw a lot of myself in her. She was the reason this story was so unique. It wouldn’t have been the same with a different character.

Overall, I loved everything about this book. It was so well written! The perfect book to start the New Year with. Who knew my first read would become a favorite! If you enjoy romances, especially rom-coms, then I think you’ll definitely enjoy this one too!

Side note ~

If you hadn’t seen my post about it already! This book also includes some of the recipes that Minnie makes throughout the book at the end. I attempted a Steak Gyllenhaal Pie (Steak and Ale) and boy! It may have taken 6 hours to cook and bake but it was delicious!!

In the book, this pie just sounded so good! I knew I wanted to try it! And seeing the recipe, it didn't seem too difficult, just very *emphasis on very* time consuming to make! But it was definitely worth the wait! Yum! Check out my post about it here!
