Everything Handmaids wear is red: the colour of blood, which defines us.
Offred is a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead, where women are prohibited from holding jobs, reading, and forming friendships. She serves in the household of the Commander and his wife, and under the new social order she has only one purpose: once a month, she must lie on her back and pray that the Commander makes her pregnant, because in an age of declining births, Offred and the other Handmaids are valued only if they are fertile. But Offred remembers the years before Gilead, when she was an independent woman who had a job, a family, and a name of her own. Now, her memories and her will to survive are acts of rebellion.
Provocative, startling, prophetic, The Handmaid's Tale has long been a global phenomenon. With this stunning graphic novel adaptation of Margaret Atwood's modern classic, beautifully realized by artist Renee Nault, the terrifying reality of Gilead has been brought to vivid life like never before.
The Handmaid’s Tale is one of my favorite fandoms. I had started the show, stopped, went back to read both the original book and the sequel, and then went to watch the show from the beginning. And this is one series I’ll watch again and again. I’ve watched it several times as it is!
Loving this story so much, I had been wanting to read this graphic novel adaption for a while, especially after my discovery of my passion for graphic novels.
And this did not disappoint! In fact, I found the original novel a bit unorthodox in the writing style. June’s thoughts were a bit all over the place. And this graphic novel follows a similar style but with the illustrations, it wasn’t as confusing. It was easier to follow and understand what was going on.
I also loved the additional ending this graphic novel included! It made the original abrupt ending of the book make a little more sense.
This will be one I'll reread over and over! Perfect for fans of The Handmaid’s Tale!
If you haven't read the original story, I do suggest starting with the first book to get all the details, it'll help before jumping into this one.
