Nine years ago, Vivienne Jones nursed her broken heart like any young witch would: vodka, weepy music, bubble baths…and a curse on the horrible boyfriend. Sure, Vivi knows she shouldn’t use her magic this way, but with only an “orchard hayride” scented candle on hand, she isn’t worried it will cause him anything more than a bad hair day or two.
That is until Rhys Penhallow, descendent of the town’s ancestors, breaker of hearts, and annoyingly just as gorgeous as he always was, returns to Graves Glen, Georgia. What should be a quick trip to recharge the town’s ley lines and make an appearance at the annual fall festival turns disastrously wrong. With one calamity after another striking Rhys, Vivi realizes her silly little Ex Hex may not have been so harmless after all.
Suddenly, Graves Glen is under attack from murderous wind-up toys, a pissed off ghost, and a talking cat with some interesting things to say. Vivi and Rhys have to ignore their off the charts chemistry to work together to save the town and find a way to break the break-up curse before it’s too late.
This was a fun, quirky witchy read. If I were asked to describe this in a sentence, I’d have to say this was like an adult version of Halloweentown with a side of spice.
From start to finish, this is filled with humorous moments. The premise follows a drunken hex placed on a guy who broke a young witch’s heart. And nine years later, when the guy returns to the town, the hex takes effect. Now the two need to work together to lift the curse before it destroys the town.
This was a quick read as we watch Vivian and Rhys try to save the town from the curse and not to fall in love again. I found following these two to be very entertaining, not only with their continuous lust for one another, but also with the events that took place around them from the misplaced hex.
We go on a wild ride! Between witchy souvenirs coming to life, talking cats, and all sorts of other magical mishaps, this story was fun to read. There was even a ghost who reminded me of HP’s moaning Myrtle. I couldn’t help but see and hear her voice through that character!
I will admit, I wasn’t super crazy about the romance itself in this one, though it was entertaining at times. I found the town’s history and all the witchy vibes more enjoyable and what truly kept me engaged.
Overalls this was a fun, fast-paced read that will surely give you some laughs, especially if you enjoy witchy reads!
