Shiver Review

Updated: Apr 14, 2021

For years, Grace has watched the wolves in the woods behind her house.

Rating: 5/5

For years, Grace has watched the wolves in the woods behind her house. One yellow-eyed wolf—her wolf—is a chilling presence she can't seem to live without.

Meanwhile, Sam has lived two lives: In winter, the frozen woods, the protection of the pack, and the silent company of a fearless girl. In summer, a few precious months of being human… until the cold makes him shift back again.

Now, Grace meets a yellow-eyed boy whose familiarity takes her breath away. It's her wolf. It has to be. But as winter nears, Sam must fight to stay human—or risk losing himself, and Grace, forever.

Call me a lovesick young adult… Oh, wait… Technically I still am? 22 is still a young adult, right? Anyways… I really don’t think there should be an age limit for who could read young adult fiction. I will always have a soft spot for them. Especially young stupid love. Oh! It just makes my heart swell!

Recently I read about a different paranormal love. The Lux series by Jennifer L. Armentrout, which is about a forbidden love between a human and an alien. My other paranormal loves are the Fallen series by Lauren Kate, which involves fallen angels. Then, of course, there’s Twilight. Were you Team Jacob or Team Edward? Honestly, I was Team Jacob. So this book, Shiver fulfills that teenage crush of mine so hard! Ah! Just thinking about the love story in Shiver makes me all stupidly teary-eyed.

Shiver is if you haven’t guessed about werewolves. However, this story has a different take on them. These werewolves aren’t able to shift at will. These wolves shift only during the summer to their human form and when it gets cold for the winter they shift back into wolves. Interesting? I thought so too. However, there’s a catch. These werewolves only have a limited amount of years after being bitten that they’re able to shift. Eventually, they won’t shift at all, and they remain wolves for the rest of their lives.

And it’s during one wolf, Sam’s final shift that he finally meets a girl, Grace. Not just any girl either, this girl is the one he saved years before. Not only that, the girl recognizes the boy as her wolf by his eyes, the only trait they’re able to keep when they between human and wolf. Then they fall in love! I mean, what else was going to happen? Everything about their love was so sweet! He treated her perfectly! It was just so cute to read! I could feel the pain Sam felt as he fought against the cold. I rooted for him to stay human!

Now I will say the ending was very predictable. Based on the route it took though, I thought the ending would occur in the sequel since I knew this was a trilogy. I was happy that it didn’t. I was perfectly content with this first book. I can already tell the second book won’t be the same and from the summary, I believe there is going to be another love interest. I mean it seems there’s almost always a rival so why not? Don’t take my word on that at all. I haven’t read the sequel yet.

This book flowed so well though. I was honestly surprised how fast I went through it. It sucked me in extremely well. I stayed up stupidly late twice reading this. I totally would have read this in one sitting if I could have.

Overall, I loved this. It’s become another favorite of mine for sure. Because I’m a girl and a sucker for romance. If you enjoy young adult fiction, especially paranormal romance, I strongly recommend you pick this up!
