It Started on Halloween Review

We follow a husband and wife who’ve been in a rut for a while and one Halloween night the husband says “Let’s kill someone.”

Rating: 4.5/5

We follow a husband and wife who’ve been in a rut for a while and one Halloween night the husband says “Let’s kill someone.” For any other person, this might raise a red flag or two or a million. Nope, his wife considers it and says “okay.” And that’s how it started. It started on Halloween…

The whole premise of this is just startling, who agrees to go kill someone just for the heck of it? Immediately, I was reminded of the Purge. Where one night a year, rules just no longer apply. That’s honestly how this whole story felt.

It had everything a short story needs! And it’s perfect for this time of year. It had all the blood and guts and I was all for it! Plus it definitely had a strong feminist vibe. I definitely recommend to anyone who loves good horror.

Warning! Light Spoilers! Nothing major :)

From the start, we get this premonition that the husband has one this before, killing someone. That’s honestly the only let down from this short story. We never explore that history. It’s definitely there, but we don’t hear it. I’d like to think the husband killed someone every year, but that year he decided to include his wife.

I also don’t think he expected his wife to love it so much. It sparked evilness inside her, a whole new psychotic confidence in her she never knew she had. With this new lust for blood, she becomes a stronger independent woman. A different woman than before. Despite how wrong everything about this story was, I went “You go, girl! Show them who’s boss!”

This book definitely had a strong feminist vibe. The wife becomes a badass psycho killer. Though, I would have liked to know if she ever got caught. I’d like to think she never did. I mean, no one ever suspects it to be a female killer.
