As men fall to the mist, the age of womankind begins to rise

Bombs strike US cities and military sites, cause fires, explosions, sonic detonations, quakes, slides, and green mist. Breathed in, the toxin melts men into puddles of bloody clothes. But women may get strange new powers.

High school science teachers leaving an Oregon mountain conference find their blood may cause plants to grow suddenly. "Warrior" Mercury 30s is now incredibly strong and fast. "Seer" Stella 40s senses future, directs them, where and when, to go or stay. "Watcher" Imani gazes toward her lost family for hours. Christian "Priestess" Karen 50+ sees their powers act, in the spirit world, as a green glow.

"Healer" Gemma 16, then three children join after losing their respective parents. They meet bad and good people in their search for The Place to build their safe perfect new world.

I’m a sucker for dystopian fiction so when I heard P.C. Cast was coming out with a feminist post-apocalyptic world, I couldn’t have been more excited. And I mean just look at this cover! This just screams badass females!

And it did not disappoint! From the very beginning, I was hooked. The premise is just so enchanting, where a green mist delivered by bombs has practically engulfed the earth and once dissipated, if it is breathed in by men, they melt into goo and leave women with uncanny abilities. We follow a group of teachers away on a conference who watch the fall of society and use their newfound abilities to survive within this new world.

I found these women we met extremely badass, especially Stella. She was definitely my favorite. One thing I truly loved was the blend of beliefs as well. We’re shown a mixture of beliefs, both spiritually and patriarchally, through our characters and the situations they experience. It truly created a thought-provoking read.

This book really took me through a loop. I went through all sorts of emotions as I made my way through. It was definitely one I didn’t want to put down.

While I definitely ended this book with more questions than answers, mostly around the green mist and our characters' abilities. These questions just leave me wanting more. But I also went into this knowing it was a duology. So I just can’t wait to dive into the next one!

I highly recommend this if you enjoy scifi dystopians with a feminist vibe!
